Bluetooth software offers direction finding

Silicon Labs adds Bluetooth 5.1 location services to its Wireless Gecko line of connectivity software and SoCs for the Internet of Things. The Bluetooth 5.1 direction finding feature allows devices to determine the direction of a Bluetooth signal using multiple methods, including angle-of-arrival and angle-of departure.

Silicon Labs’ implementation of the new feature enables detection of signal direction to within 5 degrees. Bluetooth asset tracking and indoor positioning functions typically provide location accuracy within a range of 3 meters to 4 meters. However, the direction finding of Bluetooth 5.1 achieves accuracy down to the sub-1-meter level.

In addition, Bluetooth 5.1 allows developers to reduce power consumption with sleep-clock accuracy updates and improve smart-home connection performance using general attribute caching functions. It also optimizes beaconing for Bluetooth mesh in crowded RF environments with the advertisement channel index function.

Silicon Labs’ direction finding software is available to select customers through the Silicon Labs Simplicity Studio development kit.
